Overview

Richardson's Rock Ranch is located on a working cattle ranch and rock lovers come from all over to discover thunder-eggs. Thunder-eggs are rocks about the size of oranges, similar on the outside, but with beautiful colors, designs and patterns of agate inside. Visitors can dig their own, or sort through the vast collection of rocks from all over the world at the shop.

Digs are approximately seven miles out on dirt road. The shop has chisels, wedges and lapidary machinery for sale, as well as a variety of rough rocks.

Location/Directions

Richardson's Rock Ranch is 11 miles north of Madras and east of Highway 97. Take Highway 97 to Mile Post 81 and follow the signs approximately three miles. Richardson Agate Co. LLC, 6683 NE Haycreek Road, Madras, Oregon, 97741, (541) 475-2680 or (800) 433-2680 (call before 5:00 PM PST).

Hours/Seasons

Digging is closed from November to April, or in bad weather. When open, be there before 3 pm to dig. Call ahead for availability and accessibility –(800) 433-2680. The shop is open all year, hours vary seasonally.

Fees/Cost

Rock from digs $1.00/lb., rough rocks for sale $1.00 and up.
